Bicycles on Public Transport
You can travel with a bike on Sydney and intercity trains, Metro trains, and ferry services in NSW for free at any time when there is space available.
Your bike must not prevent other passengers from getting a seat. Ensure that it does not cause inconvenience or risk to other passengers. Keep it secure so it is not a safety concern for other passengers and staff. It must be clear of the aisle, doorways and emergency exits. It is best to avoid peak hour services.
Bikes are not permitted on Sydney buses.
When travelling on the Metro, use the multi-purpose areas in the first and last carriages for space to stand with your bike.
Light rail staff reserve the right to restrict the number of bicycles or refuse access when services are full or close to capacity. They may also request a passenger to remove their bicycle from a light rail service if they believe a passenger is interfering with the comfort or safety of others.
Bikes are allowed on Sydney Ferries at the discretion of the staff. Deckhands may direct you where it is safest to put your bike. Ferries may have bike racks. Bikes should not interfere with other passengers or passageways.
If travelling on NSW TrainLink Regional trains and coaches, you will need to book your bike in advance as they are classed as checked luggage.
Bicycle racks are provided at some transport interchanges. See the Bicycle Parking section.
In the City of Ryde secure bicycle lockers are located at a number of stations and wharves. See the Bicycle Parking section for locations. Please contact the Department of Transport 131 500 for more information about the secure bicycle lockers program.
