Beauty Treatments

Beauticians carry out a variety of different procedures, many of which involve the potential for skin penetration.

Procedures conducted by beauticians include:

• facials
• depilation
• manicure
• pedicure
• waxing
• electrolysis
• blackhead removal (involving a needle/lancet)
• microdermabrasion
• manicure & pedicure
• skin needling
• cosmetic tattooing.  

Any premises conducting skin penetration procedures must comply with the requirements of the Public Health Regulations NSW 2012.

Fit Out of Beauty Salons

The premises where skin penetration activities are undertaken must be properly equipped to perform the activity: This includes:

• the finish on all surfaces within the premises should be made of materials that are easily cleaned.
• the floor should be non-slip and impervious to moisture.
• adequate washing, drainage, ventilation and lighting
• adequate facilities for the purpose of storing appliances and utensils in a hygienic manner
• a hand wash basin located in the treatment room, that has a supply of warm water, soap and single-use towels.
• a separate sink for cleaning equipment and utensils, that has a supply of warm water.
• a cleaning area should be provided, and the dirty area(s) should be separated from the clean area.
• disposable gloves, clean linen and gowns or aprons that are appropriate for the skin procedures carried out at the premises
• facilities for adequate waste disposal.

Hairdressing

A hairdressing salon is a place where people go to get their hair cut and styled. 

Hairdressers and Barbers do not carry out procedures that deliberately cause skin penetration, however, some of their procedures may damage the skin. It is important for operators to have appropriate knowledge about required hygiene standards.
