Frequently Asked Questions

For more information about the Shop Ryder, see frequently asked questions below.

What is the Shop Ryder?

The Shop Ryder is a free bus service within the City of Ryde.

Why is the service being provided?

The City of Ryde is keen to improve traffic flow by encouraging residents to leave the car at home and use public transport for local trips towards providing a more sustainable option for travel. The Shop Ryder Bus Service is a small step towards this goal.

Where and when does the service run?

There are two buses, colour-coded orange and blue to indicate which route they are travelling.

Route 1 - Orange: Meadowbank to West Ryde via Gladesville, Top Ryde City, Eastwood and Ryde Hospital.

Route 2 - Blue: Top Ryde City to Eastwood via Gladesville, Meadowbank, West Ryde and Ryde Hospital.

The service runs from Wednesday to Saturday during off-peak hours. We will endeavour to make sure that the service runs on time, but traffic conditions or other circumstances beyond our control may sometimes cause delays.

Where can I catch the Shop Ryder?

There are 9 designated Shop Ryder bus stops, and you can also catch the buses from any STA bus stop along the route. Make sure you signal the driver clearly.

Who can catch the bus?

The Shop Ryder service is open for passengers living in Ryde travelling to any of the locations along the dedicated service route.

Can I take my motorised scooter on the Shop Ryder?

No. Due to space constraints you cannot bring your motorised scooter on the bus

Can the Shop Ryder accommodate wheelchair accessibility?

Not at this time. Previously the Shop Ryder did have ability on a previous bus to accommodate wheelchairs, however, passenger usage statistics provided that the service was not utilised by wheelchair based passengers. To manage the growing demand for seating space on the small bus, this service was not renewed when the buses were replaced. Should you have queries regarding this please contact Customer Service on 9952 8222.

Is there room to store my shopping on the Shop Ryder?

You can only bring shopping that you can carry onto the bus yourself. For larger grocery shopping, you should arrange for home delivery through the supermarket.

What is the capacity of the bus?

Due to COVID19 restrictions, the maximum capacity is currently 12 passengers, each trip. Passengers are not permitted to stand on the bus.

Does the bus have seatbelts?

Yes, seatbelts are provided, and passengers under law are required to wear them.

Can I take a pram on the Shop Ryder?

Yes, prams can be taken onto the bus but they must be folded and stowed securely, and the child should be seated with their carer

What measures are being taken to ensure a COVID safe environment?

Buses are thoroughly cleaned (deep clean, sanitised & disinfected) before each shift, during lunch breaks, and at the end of shifts. This includes all contact points and surfaces (seats, handrails, bus bells, etc), as well as the aircon vents and driver's reachable controls.

Drivers check and refill any sanitising solutions, wipes, disinfectant sprays, and hand sanitisers prior to commencement of each shift.

There is no driver-to-passenger contact throughout the service and drivers are instructed to prohibit passenger-to-passenger contact where possible.

Each bus is currently fitted with "Please Sit Here" and "Do Not Sit Here" signs on each seat allocation.
