Program Information

The City of Ryde is offering preschool and early learning centres the opportunity to be a part of the Train the Trainers program.

The aim of the program is to:

  • Educate preschool and early learning centre teachers about sustainable waste practices
  • Educate preschool and early learning centre teachers about how to lead and guide centre staff, children and their families in sustainable waste practices
  • Minimise waste and increase recycling
  • Establish composting and worm farming practices

The Train the Trainers Program will consist of training days and requires commitment from the centres to provide staff to be able to attend the workshops. Workshops will be held at each centre with hands on training provided to teach staff about waste and recycling, how to approach the topic with children, what to teach and how to apply their learnings to their centre. The workshops are designed specifically for the Ryde LGA and the information which lies in the workshops is specific to Ryde.

The idea of the training is that ‘champion’ staff members will then be able to teach other staff members.

The following is to be included as part of the program:

  • 2x training workshops for staff at preschool and early learning centres.
    • Workshop 1: Waste and Recycling, including discussion about the waste hierarchy and what goes in each bin (1-2 hours).
    • Workshop 2: Composting and Worm Farming, including discussion about food waste and using leftovers (1-2 hours).

Please note workshops are only intended for staff and not for the children at the centre.

  • Choice of either a compost bin or worm farm (worms not included).
  • Education signage.
  • Access to an online program containing sustainability education teaching and learning materials (Get Grubby Program).
  • Support via phone and email.

Requirements/Eligibility

Successful preschools and early learning centres will be required to:

  • Commit to providing staff (must include the nominated ‘champion/s’) to participate in the 2x training workshops.
  • There are two workshops in this program. Centres must complete both workshops prior to receiving the resources and materials.
  • ‘Champion’ staff must be willing to lead and guide centre staff, children and their families in sustainable waste practices following the program.
  • Provide a suitable space within their centre for a compost bin or worm farm.
  • This program is open to all preschools and early childhood centres from within City of Ryde. Applications from centres outside of the LGA will not be considered.
