Snakes
All native snakes in NSW are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974. Snakes sometimes stray into urban areas in search of food, water and shelter.
Venomous snakes found in the Sydney region include the Red-bellied Black snake and the Eastern Brown snake.
Most snakes are not naturally aggressive but will defend themselves vigorously if threatened.
Discourage snakes from coming onto your property by:
-
Mowing lawns regularly and keeping garden areas free of overgrowth
-
Keeping your property free of rubbish and debris
-
Controlling rats and mice around your property.
If you see a snake on your property:
-
Do not try to kill or capture the snake – Most bites occur while trying to do this
-
Move away from the snake as calmly and quickly as possible
-
Keep children and pets well away
-
Call a licensed snake collector and keep an eye on the snake from a safe distance until the snake collector arrives.
To contact a licensed snake collector telephone the Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) on 1300 094 737.
If you are bitten by a snake apply a pressure immobilisation bandage and seek urgent medical assistance.
