Journey to the stars with Ryde Libraries

Budding scientists of all ages have a treat in store for them during this year’s National Science Week with a series of illuminating and educational events taking place as part of Council’s thrilling Ryde to the Stars program.

National Science Week 2024, which runs from 10-18 August, is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology and features more than 1,000 nationwide events, delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums, and science centres.

City of Ryde Libraries is joining in this fun and knowledge-based festival with a mixture of talks, workshops, and immersive experiences.

The Ryde to the Stars program is designed to bring all ages and abilities together to experience new technologies, learn about the universe, and inspire the next generation of science stars.

The flagship talk will be delivered on 13 August by astrophysicist and proud Wiradjuri woman Dr Kirsten Banks, who will be exploring the mysteries of the universe while honouring the rich knowledge of her ancestors.

Inspired by a documentary about the Hubble Space Telescope, Kirsten pursued her love for space, earning a PhD in astrophysics, and delving into the depths of the Milky Way galaxy. You'll often find Kirsten sharing her love for astronomy and space with more than 500,000 followers across social platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

Ryde to the Stars also includes an immersive planetarium, virtual reality sessions for youth and seniors simulating the Apollo 11 moon landing and international space station, and a series of drop-in activities to make rockets, planets, and add yourself into a growing community constellation.
