Eastwood pedestrian traffic lights switched on

The City of Ryde has taken significant steps to reduce traffic congestion and increase pedestrian safety in Eastwood town centre, with new pedestrian traffic lights now operational on West Parade, adjacent to the Rowe Street Mall.
The new pedestrian traffic lights were one of the major recommendations of the independent Eastwood Traffic and Parking Study, which identified traffic congestion and pedestrian safety as major issues that have impacted the town centre’s accessibility.
The new lights – which replace the pedestrian crossing on West Parade – will help improve traffic flow and associated bottlenecks on the western side of Eastwood town centre, while also providing greater safety for pedestrians.
City of Ryde Mayor, Clr Jordan Lane, said the new pedestrian traffic lights will make Eastwood more accessible for motorists and pedestrians alike.
“Less traffic and greater safety will hopefully encourage more people to visit Eastwood which, in turn, will provide a welcome boost to the local economy and the fantastic businesses located in the town centre,” Clr Lane said.
“But the job is not finished, with Council in the process of progressing its plans to convert the pedestrian crossing at The Avenue (opposite NAB) and Rowe Street Mall to pedestrian traffic lights. We will have further information about that project very soon.”
The installation of the new pedestrian traffic lights coincide with Council’s efforts to address parking demand and support the local economy in Eastwood.
Earlier this year, the Rowe Street East Car Park opened to the public, which features 146 car spaces.
“The City of Ryde is committed to investing in our town centres and the infrastructure we have introduced to Eastwood this year is the latest example of that commitment,” Clr Lane added.
