The City of Ryde community has been invited to give vital feedback on the potential future use of the Denistone Sports Club site, which was purchased by Council on 14 June 2024.

Council purchased the site at 59 Chatham Road, Denistone, from the Carlingford Sports and Recreation Club to ensure this significant open space and associated facilities remains available for community recreational use well into the future.

Council’s Have Your Say consultation for the site runs until Sunday 29 September 2024 and the community is being given four potential future use options to consider.

They are:

  • Registered club with liquor licence and gaming facilities: greens to be used for recreation activities that include bowling. Gaming activities could include poker machines.
  • Not-for-profit bowling entity: the site (including buildings) to be used predominantly for bowling activities, with a liquor licence and potential food and beverage operations, but no gaming activities.
  • External operator (food and beverage): the site to have a focus on food and beverage offerings which may also include associated or alternate use of the greens.
  • External operator (recreation): the site (including buildings) to be used for a range of recreation activities. This may include evening use with lighting and social competitions and may also include supporting food and beverage options.

Other uses can be suggested and will be considered.

Following the completion of the public consultation on the future use of the site, staff will workshop the matter with Councillors. A report to a Council meeting will then be prepared outlining the feedback received during the consultation period and providing a recommendation for how the site is utilised into the future. This report will also outline the next steps Council could take which may involve undertaking a competitive, public process to identify an external operator for the facility.

It is expected that the process of completing the community consultation, finalising the future use of the site, and reactivating the space will take up to two years from commencement to finalisation. While this process continues, Council welcomes the resumption of bowling activities by Carlingford Sports and Recreation Club upon the third green which it leases from Council. Council is working with the Club about its future intentions regarding its bowling activities.

The community is invited to attend two upcoming Drop-in Sessions at the site to meet with Council's Project Team, ask any questions, and provide feedback on how the site should be used.

The first session is on Saturday 31 August 2024 anytime from 10.00am-noon, and the second is on Tuesday 3 September 2024 anytime between 4.00-6.00pm.
