Mayor's Message

5 February

LUNAR NEW YEAR

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at Eastwood Oval on Saturday 8 February from 4.00 – 9.00pm for City of Ryde’s annual and much-loved Lunar New Year Festival.

It promises to be a great day of fun, with amusement rides, market stalls, food trucks, cultural performances, fireworks, and an incredible lion high pole performance to enjoy.

The City of Ryde prides itself of being a welcoming and inclusive place for people of all cultures – and joining with you, our community, for significant events like this gives me great delight.

This year we’re welcoming the Year of the Snake and I wish everyone good fortune and happiness for the next 12 months.

Drop into your local branch until Friday 28 February and pick up a Library Lovers Loyalty Card, participate in some fun activities and collect stamps to win limited edition Library Lover prizes, including fans, tote bags and entry into a $200 gift voucher draw.

AUSTRALIA DAY

I want to thank our community for joining me at Council’s brilliant Australia Day celebration at Meadowbank Park on 26 January.

Whether you were born in this wonderful country, or have settled here from other lands, you will know that the traditional way to celebrate this special day is at a backyard gathering with good food, great activities, and the people who are closest to you.

So, we created such a gathering on a large scale for our families, friends, and neighbours to enjoy. Topped off with a spectacular firework finale, it was a terrific reminder of how lucky we all are to live in such a prosperous, safe, and unified nation.

I was also very proud to have presided over a special Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony in the morning with more than 120 Grantees from 29 nations taking the pledge to become new citizens.
