Mayor's community Message

17 July

VITAL AGREEMENT

I was honoured to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of the City of Ryde with Taiwan’s Hsinchu Science Park Bureau during simultaneous digital ceremonies held in Taipei and at Council Chambers last week.

It was great to receive Federal and State Government support with the attendance of NSW Federal Senator Dave Sharma, The Hon. Jacqui Munro, Member of the NSW Legislative Council, Jordan Lane, Member of the NSW Parliament, Hugh McDermott, Member of the NSW Parliament, Stirling Wright, MPID Partnerships, Macquarie University, and Prof Sakkie Pretorius, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research), Macquarie University. Thomas Lee, Director Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sydney, was also an honoured attendee at this momentous occasion for the City of Ryde.

Cooperation between Council and the Hsinchu Science Park – which houses the world’s top two semiconductor companies among its more than 400 high-tech businesses – will focus on the advancement of the semiconductor industry, the biomedical industry, and the incubation of start-up companies.

The historic agreement means that our Macquarie Park Innovation District can play a key role for Australia in an essential global industry that produces the computer chips needed to run everything from household appliances, smartphones and cars to submarines, and medical equipment.

Investing in the advanced technology sector also has the potential to create new job opportunities, especially those with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics backgrounds.

RYDE CENTRAL

I have been receiving a lot of positive feedback on my recent series in this column detailing the long and troubled history of the Ryde Civic Centre project at 1 Devlin Street. Residents have told me they value being fully informed about the true history of how we came to have a ‘hole in the ground’.

I just want to make it clear that in a resolution passed at the 25 June Ordinary Meeting, Council determined that it will not be constructing a Civic Centre and it won’t be filling the ‘hole in the ground’ until the Office of Local Government (OLG) is satisfied that City of Ryde has a lawful and financially sustainable funding mechanism.

I am determined to resolve this dilemma in a manner that is both bipartisan and fiscally responsible.

TALENTED CITY

The City of Ryde Eisteddfod began last Saturday with the first classical vocal competition and I’m looking forward to seeing some of our City’s best talent in action over the next few months.

This brilliant showcase of singing, dancing, speech making, and instrumentals was established in 1988, and has since become one of Ryde’s most popular annual events.
