Mayor's community Message

24 July

GOING FOR GOLD

There is a massive month of sporting action ahead of us in August, with Australia’s elite athletes competing with the world’s best at the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be glued to the screen whenever possible during both Games, which always offer unforgettable moments of both high performance and high emotion as years of hard training and sacrifice are rewarded.

It’s the perfect opportunity to gather with the local community to cheer on our team – which includes North Ryde swimmer Olivia Wunsch – at Top Ryde City shopping centre, which is hosting live sites on 3 and 10 August for the Olympics, and 31 August and 7 September for the Paralympics.

The sporting festivities will take place between 5.00-10.00pm, with a chance to watch both live action and replays of the overnight highlights.

TG MILLNER

I want to reassure the community that City of Ryde is continuing the fight for the compulsory acquisition of TG Millner Fields and its retention as vital open space, despite a decision by the site’s current owners to resubmit plans for a housing development.

Despite false information to the contrary, Council does have a plan that will enable the purchase of this invaluable 6.2ha site.

I’ll be writing to the NSW Premier, asking him to provide the funding as promised by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure as part of the Macquarie Park Innovation District Rezoning Strategies and Transport Oriented Development (TOD) to ensure the purchase and future management of TG Millner by City of Ryde.

Further, the joint three tiers of government funding model that will be used to upgrade Leichhardt Oval has direct application to the compulsory acquisition of TG Millner.

Council has set aside $15 million for the purchase of this site and a three-way funding model with our council working collaboratively with the NSW and Commonwealth Governments will successfully resolve the ownership of TG Millner Fields.

SPORTS STARS

As patron of the Ryde Sports Foundation, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate the nominees recognised at the recent July Sports Star of the Year evening at Gladesville RSL.

Soccer player Alyse Oppedisano, baseball pitcher Ben Karakasis, and table tennis player Michelle Bromley will join a talented group of young athletes competing for Ryde’s Sports Star of the Year, to be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on 16 August.

Yours Sincerely,

Clr Brown - Mayor
