What does 'social inclusion' mean?
A socially inclusive society is one where all people feel valued, their differences are respected, and their basic needs are met so they can live in dignity. Social inclusion allows all people to belong, feel informed, connected and contribute to society socially, culturally, economically and politically.
Everyone has a role to play in building socially inclusive communities. This includes all levels of government, the community sector, businesses and the community itself.
I Belong - Residents of the City of Ryde talk about what makes their city special and their experiences in an inclusive city.
The City of Ryde Council recognises that it has a unique role in promoting active citizenship, reducing disadvantage, strengthening community well-being and celebrating diversity in the community.
In 2008 the City of Ryde developed a Social Justice Charter to demonstrate its commitment to building just and inclusive communities. The Charter emphasises on equity, equality, human rights and freedoms and embraces diversity to ensure that our City is dynamic and innovative and a leader in environmental, economic and social sustainability.
Each year Social Inclusion is celebrated in November to encourage communities to reconnect and be inclusive of all cultures, age groups, nationalities and the disadvantaged.
City of Ryde Council partners with local service providers on a range of Social Inclusion events and in 2015 we launched our Social Inclusion Campaign which set out our aims to promote and build awareness of social inclusion in our community.
