Racism affecting our community
The City of Ryde condemns racism of any kind. In 2014 the City of Ryde became a Racism. It Stops With Me. campaign supporter and began a number of community partnerships in promoting the anti-racism message and distributing anti-racism information at community events, which continues to the present. One of those partnerships has been with Macquarie University in initiating research and a report on International Students’ Experience of Racism: A City of Ryde and Macquarie University collaboration. The report will be published in the coming months.
Unfortunately during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, our Asian-Australian community members been particularly targeted in a number of racist incidents including verbal abuse, harassment, spray-painted racist rants and posters.
If you have experienced or witness these racist incidents against community members in future you can:
- Report the incident to the Police immediately by calling Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online.
- Find out practical ways you can respond by going to Council’s Racism. It Stops with Me. page.
- Have a look at Legal Aid NSW’s video on stopping public threats or visit their website.
While racism affects all communities the City of Ryde condemns the COVID-19-related racist targeting of Asian-Australians in our community.
