Alison-Murphy-1.png Tell us a bit about who you are and what kind of creative work you make.
I’m a local resident and I grew up here. I am a professional singer and vocal coach specialising in contemporary styles and a passion for voice science. I was the owner-operator of Starfish Vocal Studio from 2004 to 2022, operating busy studios at two locations; Dee Why and Gladesville. Under my management Starfish was nominated as a National Finalist in the Australian Small Business Champion Awards for three consecutive years by judges’ selection, and Finalist for The Local Small Business Awards Northern Beaches 2016-2022 consecutively by public vote. I closed the business in 2022 and began studying speech science at university. I’m available for some singing appearances and taking a few private singing students while I focus on my studies.

Alison-Murphy-2.png Are there any special processes, techniques or tools you use to make your creative work?
I bring a different thought process to my teaching compared to a typical singing teacher. By applying voice science and utilising trouble shooting processes, I developed a teaching framework that adapts to individual client’s needs.

What is a creative project that you’ve worked on that you’re really proud of? Why?
I have had the privilege of assisting many students with their projects but my end of year concerts were personally the most satisfying. They were an opportunity to celebrate my students’ hard work every year and provide additional learning experiences such as assisting with the stage production. My favourite of these concerts was in 2018 at Star of the Sea theatre in Manly with two concerts in one day and many extra aspects including photoshoots backstage, a candy bar fundraiser, and moving backdrops that our teenage students were able to run unassisted. It was a fun and educational experience for our students. I enjoyed it too!

Alison-Murphy-3.png What has been the highlight of your creative career so far?
My students have outperformed my expectations many times including when Jordyn Richards was awarded first place in all five events that she entered in the Ryde Eisteddfod and proceeded to be awarded Young Citizen of the Year in Hunters Hill for her musical contributions to the community. Another past student, Callie Dibble, is regularly a judge for singing competitions in the Ryde area. The highlight of teaching is that I have had the privilege of guiding many singers to achieve their personal and professional goals.

Alison-Murphy-4.png What’s your favourite part of working as an artist / creative?
I have been blessed with the opportunity to work in the performing arts and entertainment industry. After decades of singing, I still find my career exciting and I’m always keen to learn more and perfect my craft.

Do you have any top tips for emerging artists and creatives just starting out?
It is essential to know from the outset that a creative career is generally not straightforward. Artists need to understand business as well as their craft to have a career. Knowledge, skill and determination will set you up for success.
